Keynote SpeakersThe following people have been selected to deliver keynote addresses to the Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2005: Deanna Marcum, Ph.D. Guy (Bud) Tribble, M.D.-Ph.D. Hector Garcia-Molina, Ph.D. Their expertise in disciplines critical to a national cyberinfrastructure will provide a context for and further the dialog about the role of digital libraries in an evolving framework of computation, information management, networking, and intelligent sensing.
Dr. Marcum served as the director of Public Service and Collection Management at the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995. From 1989 to 1992, she was dean of the School of Library and Information Science at the Catholic University of America. From 1980 to 1989, she was first a program officer and then vice president of the Council on Library Resources. Dr. Marcum earned a Ph.D. in American studies from the University of Maryland in 1991. In 1979, she completed work on her master’s degree in library science from the University of Kentucky. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in English.
Dr. Tribble is one of the industry's noted experts in object oriented programming and user interface design. Prior to joining Eazel he was VP and Chief Technology Officer for the Sun-Netscape Alliance, responsible for guiding Internet and e-commerce software R&D. He held several VP level positions at Sun over seven years. Dr. Tribble began his career at Apple where in 1981 he was manager of the original Macintosh Software team, helping to design the Mac OS and user interface. In 1985, he helped found NeXT Computer, where he was Vice President of Software Engineering and a key architect of the NextStep operating system, a groundbreaking software environment. Dr. Tribble earned a B.A. degree in Physics at the University of California, San Diego and a M.D. and Ph.D. in Biophysics and Physiology at the University of Washington, Seattle.
His research interests include distributed computing systems, digital libraries and database systems. Garcia-Molina is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; is a member of the National Academy of Engineering; received the 1999 ACM SIGMOD Innovations Award; is a member of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (National Research Council); is on the Technical Advisory Board of DoCoMo Labs USA, Kintera, Metreo Markets, TimesTen, Verity, Yahoo Search & Marketplace; and is a member of the Board of Directors of Oracle and Kintera; and, served as a member the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 1997 to 2001. Dr. Garcia-Molina received a BS in electrical engineering from the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico, an MS in electrical engineering and a PhD in computer science from Stanford University, Stanford, California. |
